So you’re thinking about a Walt Disney World vacation and the big question is bouncing around your brain: do we REALLY need to stay at a Disney resort, or can we just book that cheaper hotel down the road?
I get it, mama. I hear this question almost every single day from busy moms trying to make the smartest choice for their family (and their budget!). As the owner of Living With The Magic Vacations, a Disney Earmarked travel agency, a former Disney Cast Member, a Certified Autism Travel Professional, and a mom who’s navigated Disney World countless times with my own neurodivergent daughter, I have A LOT of thoughts on this one!
Here’s the short answer: we almost always book our clients on property, and there are some really good reasons why. But I promise to give you the real, honest scoop, not a sales pitch. Let’s hop into all of the perks of staying at a Disney World resort so you can decide what’s right for your family!
Why We Recommend Staying at a Disney World Resort
Before we get into the specific perks, let me share why our agency believes so deeply in on-property stays.
Booking is reliable and flexible. You can lock in your Disney World vacation package with just a $200 deposit, which is SO helpful for busy moms who want to secure the trip now and pay the rest as you plan. Final payment isn’t due until about 30 days before you arrive!
The service is incredible. From the moment you arrive, you’re folded into the Disney experience. Cast Members are trained to make your stay feel personal and special, and it shows.
You get to live inside the Disney bubble. This is the big one for me. When you stay on property, you’re not driving past strip malls and sitting in Orlando traffic every day. You’re immersed in the magic from wake-up to bedtime, and it completely changes the feel of your vacation!
Early Theme Park Entry (One of My Favorite Perks!)
Every single Disney resort guest, from Value to Deluxe, gets to enter any theme park 30 minutes before it officially opens. Every. Single. Day.
This might not sound like much, but friends, 30 minutes of early park time can mean the difference between riding Seven Dwarfs Mine Train with a 5-minute wait and a 90-minute wait!
My tip: arrive at the park gates about 60 minutes before the posted early entry time, head straight to the most popular attraction that’s open for early entry, and watch your family knock out a headliner before most guests have even finished their coffee.
Extended Evening Hours for Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Guests
If you’re staying at a Disney Deluxe Resort or Disney Deluxe Villa, you unlock one of my absolute favorite perks: Extended Evening Hours. On select nights, you can stay and play in a select theme park for a few extra hours after the park closes to day guests.
Picture Magic Kingdom at 11:00 PM with shorter lines, the castle glowing, and your family riding favorites with barely any crowds. That’s the magic!
Our family LOVES taking advantage of this perk. It lets us truly maximize our park time while still enjoying a relaxing mid-day break back at the resort. And good news: Disney has confirmed Extended Evening Hours will continue through 2027!
Lightning Lane Multi Pass 7 Days in Advance
Disney resort guests can purchase and book Lightning Lane Multi Pass (LLMP) up to 7 days before check-in, for the full length of your stay (up to 14 days).
Off-property guests? They can only book 3 days out.
That 4-day head start is HUGE for snagging the most popular Lightning Lanes like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure or Tiana’s Bayou Adventure before they’re gone. If you want a deeper dive on Lightning Lane strategy, check out my post on Disney Lightning Lane hacks to maximize your park time!
Complimentary Disney Transportation
When you stay on property, Disney transportation is included. That means:
- Buses to all four theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs
- The monorail (if you stay at a monorail resort!)
- The Disney Skyliner (gliding above the parks is SO fun)
- Boats and water taxis at select resorts
- Minnie Van service available for an additional fee
No rental car. No paying $30+ a day for parking at the theme parks. No navigating unfamiliar roads after a long park day with tired, sticky kiddos.
This is one of the reasons on-property stays are so wonderful for neurodivergent kids. When my daughter needs a break, we can pop back to the resort in minutes without the hassle of a car. More on that below!
Advance Dining Reservations at 60+10
Disney resort guests can book Advance Dining Reservations at 60 days before check-in for the entire length of their stay (up to 10 days).
Off-property guests have to book one day at a time, and trust me, if you want Cinderella’s Royal Table, Space 220, or Topolino’s Terrace, that 10-day head start is essential!
MagicBand+ Perks
MagicBand+ is the next generation of the classic MagicBand, and while they’re no longer free (you’ll purchase one at a resort guest discount), they’re worth it for the convenience:
- Your room key
- Your park ticket
- Your Lightning Lane entry
- Your PhotoPass connection
- Charge food and merchandise directly to your room folio (no digging for your wallet!)
Plus, MagicBand+ interacts with special experiences throughout the parks. It’s a fun bonus for the kids!
Resort Theming and Amenities
Every Disney resort has its own story, theme, and personality, and that’s part of the magic of choosing to stay on property.
Wake up to giraffes outside your window at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Feel like you’re in the Caribbean at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. Step into the world of Cars or The Little Mermaid at Art of Animation. Relax in the woods at Fort Wilderness. Every resort tells a different story!
The pools, the themed dining, the nightly activities, even the lobby music is carefully chosen to make you feel transported.
The Option to Purchase the Disney Dining Plan
One of the most underrated perks for busy moms who hate surprise vacation bills? The ability to purchase the Disney Dining Plan as part of your package.
You prepay your meals upfront, so when you’re in the parks, there’s no math, no wondering if you’re over budget, and no sticker shock at checkout. You’ve already paid for it! Just tap your MagicBand and enjoy.
This is a total game changer for families who want to budget confidently.
Lesser-Known Perks Most Guides Miss
Okay, THIS is where being a former Cast Member and agency owner comes in handy, because these are the hidden gems most blog posts skip right over!
Outdoor Movie Nights
Many (if not all!) Disney resorts host outdoor movie nights, free for resort guests. But the BEST one? Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground with the Chip ‘n Dale Campfire Sing-Along! Even if you aren’t staying at Fort Wilderness, you can visit (more on that in a sec!).
Fort Wilderness Is Free to Visit
Here’s a fun insider tip: Fort Wilderness is free to visit even if you aren’t staying there! Hop on Disney transportation, walk around the grounds, visit the horses at the Tri-Circle-D Ranch, catch the campfire sing-along, or book the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue dinner show. It’s absolutely magical at Christmas!
Resort Christmas Decor Hopping
Speaking of Christmas, one of my FAVORITE traditions is resort hopping to see the holiday decorations. Each Deluxe resort goes ALL out with their decor, and the gingerbread displays at Disney’s Grand Floridian, Disney’s Beach Club, and Disney’s Yacht Club are iconic. Make a whole evening of it!
Front Desk Scavenger Hunts
This one is a mom-hack gold mine. Many Disney resorts offer free scavenger hunts for kids! Just ask at the front desk when you check in. It’s a wonderful mid-day break activity that keeps little ones engaged without any screen time.
The Electric Water Pageant
If you stay at one of the monorail resorts (Disney’s Contemporary, Grand Floridian, or Polynesian), you can catch the Electric Water Pageant, a floating parade of lit-up sea creatures that glides along the Seven Seas Lagoon each night. It’s a little slice of classic Disney magic that most guests don’t even know exists!
Which Disney Resort Tier Is Right for Your Family?
One question I get ALL the time: “Amanda, which resort tier should we pick?”
Disney resorts are grouped into three main categories:
Value Resorts (like Pop Century and All-Star Movies) are budget-friendly, heavily themed, and get you all the same core perks (Early Theme Park Entry, 7-day LLMP, Disney transportation, and more).
Moderate Resorts (like Caribbean Beach, Port Orleans, and Coronado Springs) step up the theming, amenities, and pool experiences. They also tend to feel quieter and more relaxing than Values.
Deluxe Resorts and Deluxe Villas (like Animal Kingdom Lodge, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and Wilderness Lodge) unlock Extended Evening Hours, walking distance or monorail/boat access to parks, and the highest level of theming and service.
Here’s our family’s honest take: we almost always stay at moderate or higher. Our daughter is neurodivergent, and we’ve found that value resorts (while wonderful!) can feel overstimulating for her with the larger crowds, louder pool areas, and bus-only transportation. Moderates hit the sweet spot of quiet, relaxing, and magical.
When we splurge on a Deluxe, we get the best of both worlds: Extended Evening Hours to maximize park time AND a peaceful home base for mid-day breaks. The ability to pop back to the resort for a nap, a swim, or just some sensory down time is one of the biggest reasons on-property stays are so valuable for families with neurodivergent kids.
As a Certified Autism Travel Professional, I help families navigate these decisions all the time. There really is a right resort for every family!
What’s New and Exciting for 2026
There’s a LOT to celebrate at Walt Disney World this year, and a few of these tie-ins make staying on property even better:
- Complimentary water park admission on check-in day (for stays between May 26 and September 8, 2026). Land at MCO, drop your bags, and head straight to Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach for FREE!
- Typhoon Lagoon After Hours is BACK! This is such a fun event, and resort guests are perfectly positioned to enjoy it.
- Halloween and Christmas Party dates haven’t been announced yet, but my clients get the heads-up from me the moment they drop so we can snag tickets before they sell out. These parties are a bucket-list WDW experience!
- Disney is rolling out a Southwest Airlines luggage transfer service at select resorts, making arrival even easier for busy families flying in from out of town.

Is Staying On Property Actually Worth It?
I’ll be honest with you: our agency almost exclusively books on-property stays. We believe THAT much in the Disney bubble and everything it has to offer!
The rare times we do book off property?
- A client has DVC points or hotel points they want to use
- Family members are staying somewhere specific and they want to be together
- They’re splitting time with that other park down the street 😉
Otherwise? On property wins every time. The convenience, the perks, the magic, and the peace of mind for moms who don’t want to juggle rental cars, parking, and logistics. It’s just the smarter choice for most families.
