What to Pack for a Hawaiian Cruise: A Family Travel Advisor’s Complete Guide
A Hawaiian cruise is one of those dreamy family vacations that can also feel a little overwhelming to plan. The destinations? Absolutely stunning! The packing? A little trickier than your average beach trip!
Here’s the thing most families don’t realize until they start packing: Hawaii cruises are not one-size-fits-all when it comes to what you’ll need in your suitcase. Are you flying to Honolulu and sailing the islands? Or boarding in Los Angeles for a longer journey? Those are two very different packing lists, friend!
So let’s break it all down together! After more than a decade of planning family vacations, I’m sharing exactly what to pack for a Hawaiian cruise, no matter which itinerary you choose. Grab your suitcase, mama — let’s get you ready for an adventure your family will talk about for years!
The Two Types of Hawaiian Cruises (And Why It Affects Your Packing)
Before we even open a suitcase, you need to know which type of Hawaiian cruise you’re taking, because it changes everything about how you pack!
Inter-Island Hawaiian Cruises
These cruises start and end in Hawaii (typically Honolulu) and sail between the islands for around 7 nights. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Pride of America is the go-to option here — it’s the only ship that sails inter-island year-round! You’ll spend your entire vacation in tropical weather, hopping from Oahu to Maui to the Big Island to Kauai!
For this trip, you’re packing for warm, humid, sunny days and balmy evenings. Think: vacation mode from the moment you step off the plane!
Hawaiian Cruises from the West Coast
These cruises depart from places like Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, or Vancouver and typically run 10 to 15+ nights round trip. You’ll have multiple sea days on either side of your Hawaii stops, which means cooler weather at the start and end of your trip!
For this trip, you’re packing for two climates: cool/mild on departure and arrival days, and full tropical mode in the middle. Layering is your best friend!
If you’re still figuring out which option works best for your family, I wrote a whole post on the best time to cruise to Hawaii with Norwegian Cruise Line that breaks down timing, weather, and what to expect!
Packing Essentials for ANY Hawaiian Cruise
No matter which itinerary you choose, these items belong in EVERY Hawaiian cruise suitcase:
- 2-3 swimsuits (you’ll always have one drying!)
- Reef-safe sunscreen (Hawaii has strict laws about sunscreen ingredients to protect coral reefs, so check the label!)
- Wide-brim sun hat or baseball cap
- UV-protection sunglasses
- Lightweight, breathable clothing like cotton or linen
- Comfortable walking sandals (Tevas, Chacos, or similar)
- Flip-flops for the pool deck
- One pair of closed-toe shoes for excursions
- Light cardigan or sweatshirt (cruise ship AC can be CHILLY!)
- Cruise-appropriate evening outfits (most ships have at least one or two slightly dressier nights)
- Reusable water bottle
- Daypack or beach tote
- Quick-dry towel (some ships provide them, but a personal one is handy!)
- Phone charger and portable power bank
- Any prescription medications in your carry-on
- Motion sickness medication (Bonine, Dramamine, or Sea-Bands), even if you don’t usually need it!
Packing Tips for Inter-Island Hawaiian Cruises
If you’re sailing entirely within Hawaii, you can pack lighter and lean fully into tropical mode!
What to focus on:
- More swimwear and beach gear since you’ll likely be in the water nearly every day
- Reef shoes or water shoes for rocky beaches and snorkeling spots
- Aloha shirts, sundresses, and casual island wear for evenings (very few of these cruises have formal nights!)
- A lightweight rain jacket or packable poncho because tropical showers happen, especially on Kauai and the Big Island!
- Bug spray for evening luaus or rainforest excursions
What you can leave OUT:
- Heavy jackets or winter wear
- Multiple pairs of jeans (you’ll barely wear them!)
- Cocktail dresses or formal attire (unless you really love dressing up)
Packing Tips for a Hawaiian Cruise from the West Coast
If you’re departing from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, or Vancouver, your packing list grows a bit because you’re prepping for two different climates in one trip!
What to ADD on top of the essentials:
- A warmer jacket or fleece for embarkation day, sea days, and disembarkation
- Long pants or jeans for cooler evenings on deck
- Closed-toe sneakers for sea-day activities and chilly mornings
- A few long-sleeve tops for layering
- Sweatpants or comfy lounge clothes for sea days
- A pashmina or wrap that doubles as a beach cover-up AND a layer for cool ship evenings
The good news? You’ll have plenty of laundry options on most ships, so you don’t have to pack a separate outfit for every single day. Mix, match, and re-wear, mama!
Excursion-Specific Packing Must-Haves
Hawaii is famous for incredible shore excursions, but each one has its own packing needs! Here’s what to throw in your daypack for the most popular ones:
Snorkeling & Beach Days
- Swimsuit (worn under clothes)
- Rash guard or UV swim shirt for the kids
- Reef shoes
- Underwater camera or GoPro
- Microfiber towel
- Snacks and extra water
Luaus
- Sundress, aloha shirt, or smart casual outfit
- Light sweater (it can get cool after sunset!)
- Comfortable sandals (you may sit on the ground or walk on grass)
- Camera!
Volcano Hikes & Big Island Excursions
- Sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes or sneakers
- Long pants (lava rocks are SHARP!)
- Light jacket (higher elevations get cool and windy)
- Refillable water bottle
- Extra socks
Pearl Harbor & Cultural Sites
- Modest, respectful clothing (shoulders covered is appreciated)
- Closed-toe shoes
- No bags or backpacks allowed at the USS Arizona Memorial, so plan ahead!
- Sun protection (much of the site is outdoors)
This is exactly the kind of detail your travel advisor handles for you, so you’re not stuck Googling at the last minute! Want to know what else we take off your plate? Check out what a cruise planner can do for you that you can’t do yourself!
The Easy-to-Forget Items That Save Your Vacation
These are the items I see SO many families forget, and trust me, you’ll thank me later!
- Reef-safe sunscreen (worth mentioning twice because Hawaii bans certain chemical sunscreens!)
- Aloe vera gel for inevitable sunburns
- Anti-chafing balm for active days
- Hair ties and a wide-tooth comb (humidity is REAL, friends!)
- Plastic zip bags for wet swimsuits
- A laundry bag to separate clean and dirty clothes
- Magnetic hooks for cabin walls (cruise cabin storage is limited!)
- Outlet adapter or extension cord (cruise cabins have very few outlets!)
- Lanyard for your cruise card
- Highlighter to mark daily ship newsletters
- Small first aid kit with band-aids, ibuprofen, and antacids
- Backup glasses or contacts
- Copy of your passport stored separately from the original
A Few Things You Can Leave at Home
Busy moms, hear me out: you do NOT need to pack everything! Here’s what you can confidently leave behind:
- Your fanciest formal wear (most Hawaii cruises are casual to “country club casual”)
- Beach towels (the ship provides them!)
- Hair dryer (cabins have one!)
- Excessive shoes (3-4 pairs total is plenty)
- Heavy books (load up your Kindle or phone instead)
- Bulky strollers if you have toddlers (consider a lightweight umbrella stroller)
A Family-Friendly Reminder
Hawaiian cruises are some of the best family vacations out there, especially for kids who love adventure, beaches, and exploring new places! If you’re cruising with little ones (or big ones!), you’ll want to pick a ship that genuinely excels at family experiences. I love sharing why Norwegian Cruise Line is one of the best cruise lines for kids and how to know which cruise line is the best fit for your family!
Pro Tip: Pack a Carry-On Day Bag
One of the biggest mistakes I see families make is checking ALL their luggage on embarkation day. Your big bags can take HOURS to arrive at your cabin!
Pack a small carry-on with:
- Swimsuits for everyone
- Sunscreen
- A change of clothes
- Medications
- Phone chargers
- Important documents
That way, your family can hit the pool or explore the ship the moment you board, without waiting around. Worry-free fun, right from the start!
