Is Travel Insurance Worth It? An Honest Answer From a Family Travel Advisor
If you’ve ever stared at that little box during checkout that asks, “Would you like to add travel insurance?” and wondered whether to click yes or skip it, you are NOT alone! It’s one of the most common questions we get from families booking vacations, and honestly? It’s one of the most important ones too!
So let’s chat about it, friend to friend. Is travel insurance worth it for your family vacation? After more than a decade of helping busy moms plan their dream family vacations, I have a very strong opinion (and a few real-life stories that might just convince you).
Spoiler alert: my answer is almost always yes. But the WHY behind that answer is what matters most, so let’s dig in!
What Travel Insurance Actually Covers
Before we get into whether travel insurance is worth it, let’s talk about what it actually does! Travel insurance is designed to protect the money you’ve invested in your vacation when life throws an unexpected curveball. Most comprehensive plans cover:
- Trip Cancellation – If you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason (think illness, injury, a death in the family, jury duty, and more), your non-refundable costs can be reimbursed.
- Trip Interruption – If something happens DURING your trip that forces you to cut it short or rearrange plans, this kicks in.
- Trip Delay – Flight delays, weather issues, mechanical problems… this covers extra costs like hotels and meals when you’re stuck.
- Medical Emergencies – Your regular health insurance often does NOT cover you outside the U.S. (and Medicare definitely doesn’t). Travel medical coverage is a game changer.
- Emergency Evacuation – If you need to be airlifted off a cruise ship or out of a remote destination, this can save you tens of thousands of dollars.
- Lost or Delayed Baggage – Because nothing says “vacation” like landing in Orlando without your kids’ clothes!
Some plans also include “Cancel For Any Reason” (CFAR) upgrades, which are exactly what they sound like, and a total game changer when life is unpredictable.
The Real Reason I Always Recommend Travel Insurance
Here’s the thing about family vacations: there are SO many moving parts. Flights, hotels, theme park tickets, cruise reservations, rental cars, dining reservations, excursions, the list goes on! When one piece falls apart, it has a ripple effect on everything else.
And family life? It’s beautifully unpredictable. Kids get ear infections the night before a flight. Grandparents have emergencies. Snowstorms pop up out of nowhere. Cars break down on the way to the airport. Insurance is what keeps an unexpected moment from turning into a financial disaster on top of an emotional one.
I want my families to focus on the magic of their vacation, not on what could go wrong. Travel insurance is a HUGE part of that peace of mind. (Honestly, helping you navigate decisions like this is just one of the many reasons working with a cruise planner is such a game changer!)
Two Real Stories That Show Why Travel Insurance Matters
I could talk about coverage limits and policy benefits all day, but stories make it real. So here are two situations my team and I have actually seen play out, and they both still stick with me!
Story #1: The Cruise That Almost Wasn’t (and the Insurance That Came Through)
One of our amazing advisors went on a cruise back when post-COVID testing was still required at the port. She and her travel companions did everything right. They followed the rules, packed for an incredible week at sea, and showed up to embarkation ready to sail!
And then… one of them tested positive at the port.
Just like that, the trip pivoted. They couldn’t board the ship. Instead, they ended up at a hotel, navigating an unexpected situation in a new place. Some members of their travel party bought insurance with the cruise while others, bougth third-party. Here’s the kicker: the third-party insurance paid out within a few weeks. The cruise line’s own coverage took MONTHS.
That experience cemented something we already knew: third-party travel insurance is almost always the way to go for our family travelers. It’s typically more comprehensive, faster to pay out, and gives you a true safety net.
Story #2: The Family Who Skipped Insurance (and the Cruise They Never Boarded)
Now for the story that breaks my heart a little every time I tell it. I had a sweet family who decided to skip travel insurance on a cruise vacation. They figured the odds were low, and they wanted to save a few dollars.
On their travel day, a major delay hit. Not just a “we’ll get you there in a few hours” delay. A serious, multi-day disruption that meant they could not get to their port in time to board the ship. And by the time they could have caught up to the cruise mid-itinerary, they decided it just wasn’t worth joining for the days that were left.
The result? They lost the money they paid for the cruise AND the excursions they had pre-booked. Thousands of dollars, just gone, with no way to recover any of it.
If they had purchased travel insurance? That story ends very differently. They would have been reimbursed and able to rebook a future trip with their family.

After years of seeing how different companies handle claims, communicate with travelers, and actually show up when families need them, we have a clear favorite: Trawick International!
Trawick has been around since 1998, and they’ve built a strong reputation for comprehensive coverage at a great value. Some of the reasons we love recommending them to our families:

Sailaway comes in three tiers (Essential, Cruise, and Luxury), so you can pick the level of coverage that fits your trip and budget. These plans are built with cruisers in mind, which means the coverage actually addresses the unique things that can go wrong on a cruise vacation, from missed ports to onboard medical situations to that all-important pre-cruise flight delay.
If you’re booking a cruise with our team, this is the option I’m most often recommending right now! And if you’re specifically eyeing a Disney sailing, you might also love this post on whether you really need a travel advisor for your Disney Cruise — spoiler, the answer involves a LOT more than just booking your room!
When Should You Buy Travel Insurance?
Sooner is better! Many of the best benefits, like Cancel For Any Reason coverage and pre-existing condition waivers, are time-sensitive and need to be purchased within a specific window of your initial trip deposit (usually 14-21 days).
When you book with our team, we’ll always remind you about your insurance options and walk you through what makes sense for YOUR trip. No high pressure, no upselling, just honest guidance!
So… Is Travel Insurance Worth It?
For family vacations? In my professional and personal opinion: yes, almost every single time!
You’ve worked hard to plan and pay for this vacation. You’ve coordinated schedules, saved up, and built a trip your family will remember forever. A small percentage of that total investment to protect ALL of it just makes sense, especially when life with kids can throw something unexpected at you at any moment!
And remember, you don’t have to figure this out alone! When you book with Living With The Magic Vacations, we walk you through your insurance options, help you compare what’s covered, and make sure you have the right plan in place before your trip. That’s part of what we do best!
