Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory at Disney’s moderate resort Port Orleans French Quarter might seem like an unusual choice for a restaurant review, but everyone needs to hit up the Quick Service restaurant at their resort, even if just for a quick breakfast or late-night snack.  If you plan to stay at French Quarter, or its sister resort Port Orleans Riverside, you may be thrilled to know that you will not be disappointed with this Quick Service option.

On my most recent Disney World trip in May for our agency’s Girls Getaway Weekend 2019, my mom and I had the opportunity to try breakfast, lunch, dinner, and, the most important meal of the day–beignets!

I have never been overly impressed with the resort Quick Service restaurants, and I was definitely prepared to be underwhelmed again, especially since this was the first time I was traveling with someone who is gluten-free.  I had visions of waiting forever to talk with a chef, and then waiting even longer for her gluten-free meal to be made.  However, I couldn’t have been more wrong!

On our arrival day, our Disney Springs plans were thwarted by a cancelled flight, so we ended up arriving at our resort around 7:00 PM, and didn’t make our way to Sassagoula Floatworks until about 8:30 PM.  Things looked pretty quiet behind the serving stations, so I was already mentally adding time to my original assumption of how long it would take to actually be served a gluten-free meal.  But I was completely wrong!  We let one of the Cast Members know my mom was gluten intolerant and asked if she could see a gluten-free menu.  Instead, they called the chef right over and, in a nutshell, he told her she could have just about everything on the menu.  Their goal is to make it possible for most everyone to have what they want from the menu.  Awesome!  We decided to share the Create-Your-Own Signature Rice Bowl with the Sustainable Fish of the Day (salmon…yum!).  This rice bowl option is already a gluten-free, so it was ready in no time flat.  Thinking ahead, we also ordered the gluten-free beignets right away because we assumed they would take a little time.  They were ready before we finished paying!

Our dinner couldn’t have been better!  The rice bowl was more than enough for the two of us to share, and the flavors were excellent.  We really thought the side of salsa truly made the dish.  The tomatoes in the salsa were sweet and fresh, as if the chef had picked them from his garden that morning.  This is definitely not the quality I have experienced in the past at resort Quick Service locations.  So impressive!  And I have not forgotten about the beignets.  Neither of us would have guessed they were gluten-free.  Not gummy at all!  And they were warm, and had the perfect over-abundance of powdered sugar.  My only complaint was that they were hollow.  Kind of a bummer, but that didn’t keep us from ordering them 2 more times during our visit!

During our stay, I also enjoyed Wolferman’s English Muffin Breakfast Sandwich, which they kindly allowed me to swap bacon in place of the house-made ham, and the Veggie Flatbread.  Just like our dinner, both of these portions were more than enough and tasted fantastic!  The flatbread is easily shareable, and I loved that it was made-to-order, so it was nice and fresh.  Lots of veggies too!  I almost forgot to mention that Sassagoula has the bonus of Coke Freestyle machines!  YES!!!

The only menu item that we tried and didn’t enjoy was the chicory coffee.  It was a far cry from what is served in New Orleans!  The beignets made up for it though!

Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory is just another reason Port Orleans French Quarter is my favorite moderate resort at Disney World!
